The New England Patriots cut Aaron Hernandez on Wednesday, following his arrest at his home in suburban Boston. The tight end has been the subject of an investigation into the murder of Hernandez’s friend Odin Lloyd, whose body was discovered near Hernandez’s home last week.
Hernandez has reportedly destroyed his cellphone, his home’s video surveillance system and had professional cleaners scrub his house on the day that Lloyd’s body was found. Police have done extensive searches of his property and even sent scuba divers into a pond nearby.
In a statement, the Patriots said, “A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
